What do spinach, hamburgers and green onions have in common?
BJC ACO wants you to know that unwashed produce, such as spinach, lettuce or green onions, or undercooked beef, especially hamburger, can increase your risk of infection with E. coli bacteria.
Most bacteria in our intestinal tract are harmless, but a few strains of E. coli are responsible for serious food-borne infections. Older adults, children under 5 and those with a weakened immune system may develop serious complications. Cook all ground meat, hamburger or roast beef thoroughly, to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees.
Order beef cooked medium or well done when eating out. Wash raw produce, using running water and a scrub brush. And make sure that family members, including children, wash their hands after using the bathroom.
