Know Before You Go to the ER

Whenever an illness or injury occurs, you have to decide how serious it is and where to seek medical treatment. You may need a higher level of care and immediate treatment. Or, for minor injuries or illnesses, you may be able to receive treatment with virtual care or a walk-in clinic.

Seek treatment at the ER for these conditions:

• Heart attack symptoms - Chest pain or discomfort; nausea; shortness of breath
• Stroke symptoms - Numbness in the face, arm or leg; sudden confusion; dizziness; blurred vision
• Broken bones
• Bleeding that doesn’t stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure
• Major burns
• Severe allergic reactions to foods or insects
• High fever that can't be controlled by aspirin or ibuprofen
• Dehydration associated with persistent vomiting or diarrhea
• Loss of consciousness
• Seizures
