The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine began seeing patients Jan. 7 at its newest outpatient location, in south St. Louis County.
Located at Interstate 55 and Butler Hill Road, Siteman Cancer Center-South County offers access to the same advanced treatments, including more than 240 clinical trials, and technology available at Siteman’s main location at Washington University Medical Center.
“Treatment at a top 10 U.S. cancer center just got easier for hundreds of thousands of area residents,” says Timothy Eberlein, MD, Siteman’s director. “Along with convenience, patients at our South County location will benefit from the world-class cancer care and outstanding research of our Washington University physicians.”
Multidisciplinary care provided by radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and surgeons will allow patients to see as many as three physicians in one trip. This team approach also means a patient’s treatment plan can be determined in one visit.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital installed a linear accelerator at the new facility to provide state-of-the-art radiation therapy, and Washington University will operate an infusion center for chemotherapy. The 16-acre site includes parking close to the building and green space for patients and their families to enjoy. Future plans include a healing garden.
Putting the patients’ experience first, planners at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital defined several guiding values that the designers kept in mind for the new building, including promoting trust, instilling calm, conveying respect, ensuring quality and offering inspiration.
Bruce Roth, MD, is director of medical oncology at the new location, and Parag Parikh, MD, is director of radiation oncology.
BSA LifeStructures was the architecture and engineering firm for the $27.5 million project. Paric Construction managed construction of the new 37,000-square-foot facility.
