BJC HealthCare has been named to the Forbes list of America's Best Large Employers 2023, placing among the "Top 100." The list recognizes 500 of the nation's top employers with 5,000 or more employees.
In announcing the honor, Forbes praised the health care organizations on the list, noting their strong connections with employees, despite the stress of the past several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are proud of this national recognition for BJC HealthCare, our employees and our communities," says Jackie Tischler, BJC senior vice president and chief people officer. "And we thank our 30,000 caregivers who bring their best every day to support our patients, each other and our promise that everyone deserves extraordinary care."
Tischler says the Top 100 ranking is a reflection that employees are committed to BJC's mission, values and priorities.
"Our team members live out our mission and Our BJC Values of Compassion, Respect, Excellence, Safety and Teamwork with their patients, co-workers and community members every day," Tischler says, noting that these values are introduced to team members on day one, during new employee orientation. "From their first day, we want team members to know that everything we do is grounded in Our BJC Values."
Tischler says the ranking is also confirmation that team members feel a sense of connection, or belonging, at work.
"We've placed a great deal of focus on the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion to create a workplace where each of our team members can experience a true sense of belonging every day," she says. "At its very core, belonging leads to improved job satisfaction and performance, decreased turnover and burnout, and increased collaboration, problem solving and decision making.
"It's important that all of our team members feel like they belong, that they can be their authentic selves in alignment with our values — creating an environment that allows us to not only be the provider of choice, but to be their employer of choice as well."
Tischler also notes the resources available to team members to advance their careers through the BJC Institute for Learning and Development, BJC's competitive pay and benefits, and the ways the organization continues to grow and adapt to meet employees' needs — such as the new flexible scheduling option for nursing staff and BJC's new rewards and recognition system, BJC Shines.
"We've made a commitment to provide extraordinary care to our communities — and our 30,000 team members are the ones who make that happen," Tischler says. "We're proud to give them the recognition they deserve, and we're excited that they've recognized BJC as one of America's Best Large Employers."
BJC ranked No. 91 on the Forbes list. Only two other St. Louis employers made the Top 100 with BJC: Edward Jones (No. 53) and Washington University (No. 69).
To compile the America's Best Large Employers 2023 list, Forbes partnered with the market research firm Statista, which surveyed about 45,000 workers at American companies and institutions with more than 5,000 employees. Participants were asked if they would recommend their current employers to friends and family, on a scale of 0 to 10, and to cite any other employer they would also recommend. The final list ranks the 500 companies that received the most recommendations.
