School Outreach and Youth Development

BJC School Outreach and Youth Development provides programs for youth and adults that promote mental and physical wellness in schools and community.

School-based programs are designed to meet Missouri and Illinois academic health guidelines. 

Community-based programs are co-created and co-designed to support “out of school time” learning.

Consultation Services 

The BJC School Outreach and Youth Development School Health Advisory Council liaison program connects school wellness champions with resources for youth and adults through partnerships with BJC departments and community organizations. 

  • Co-design programs to help empower school and community members in their health efforts
  • Collaborate with school or organization teams to implement school outreach programs using a train-the-trainer model
  • Facilitate professional development programs on nutrition, fitness, safety, substance use/misuse and sexual behaviors
  • Co-create outdoor learning spaces at schools and community organizations

Health Education Programs for Schools

(multi-session programs are designed with pre- and post-tests)

Nutrition and Physical Activity/Fitness

Funtastic Nutrition: Designed for grades 2-5 to learn the impact of healthy eating on physical and mental health.
Explore Health: Designed for grades 6-12 to learn the health benefits and risks associated with nutrition and lifestyle behaviors. 
SNEAKERS: Designed for grades 4-6 to learn how the respiratory, muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems relate to physical fitness.

Substance Use/Misuse

Power of Choice: Designed for grades 9-12 to learn the impact of tobacco, alcohol and other substances on health. It covers media influence, peer pressure, resiliency and refusal skills.

Sexual Health Behaviors

Heart 2 Heart (middle school): Designed for grades 6-8 to learn about the human body and how to make informed decisions sexual health.
Heart 2 Heart (high school): Designed for grades 9-12 to learn about teen sexual health, healthy relationships and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

Safety (Bullying Prevention)

Buddies: Designed for grades K-5 to learn about the importance of communication, friendship and other life skills in preventing bullying.
ConneXtions: Designed for grades 6-8 to learn how often and when to appropriately use digital communication to become better connected as individuals.
Intersections: Designed for grades 6-8 to learn ways to improve social and interpersonal skills using the principles of emotional intelligence.

Career Exploration Opportunities

Experts at BJC hospitals and affiliated colleges collaborate to provide career exploration opportunities for youth in the St. Louis region. Professionals at these facilities “plant the seeds” for high school students to explore career options, thus ensuring the development of a future workforce. Career program options include:

  • Classroom career presentations
  • Job shadowing
  • Internships through career and technical education teachers (CTE), Project Lead The Way (PLTW) and other specialty/partner programs
