SIMPLE STEPS FOR A HEALTHY HEART
Is your lifestyle impacting your risk for heart disease? Reduce your risk of heart disease by incorporating heart-healthy habits and making these seven changes in your daily life.
Manage Your Blood Pressure
It is critical for your blood pressure to stay within normal range, as high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
TIP: Regularly monitor your blood pressure, whether at the doctor’s office or at home. Set a daily reminder in your calendar or phone to check your blood pressure. **For more information on how to properly monitor your blood pressure at home, click here.
Control Your Cholesterol
Give your arteries the best chance to remain clear of blockages and avoid heart disease and stroke by managing your cholesterol.
TIP: Quit smoking, as smoking lowers good cholesterol and raises your risk of heart disease. One way to quit is to cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke each day or how many times you vape until stopping completely. Also eating foods with fiber is great for removing bad cholesterol from your body. Try adding beans, lentils, peas, fruit and whole grains to your daily diet.
Reduce Your Blood Sugar
Most food that we consume turns into glucose, also known as blood sugar. Blood sugar is good for energy, however too much can damage your heart and other organs.
TIP: Manage your weight to prevent diabetes. Plan your meals ahead of time, stay hydrated with water or no-calorie beverages and exercise daily to help keep your blood sugar at a healthy level.
Get Active!
Daily physical activity increases your length and quality of life. Introducing exercise can also improve your circulation, lower your blood pressure, and reduce your cholesterol.
TIP: Gradually increase the intensity of your physical activity by time, distance, or effort. Physical activity doesn’t have to be traditional exercise. Find an activity you do enjoy – like dancing, hiking or walking the mall. Invite a friend to join you to help pass the time.
Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet
Essential in preventing heart disease, a heart-healthy diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, can reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke.
TIP: Eat fruits, vegetables, foods rich in protein and fish, as well as limit daily intake of salts, sugars and fatty foods. Search online for healthy recipes to add to your meals. Plan ahead for your trip to the grocery store by preparing a list and only buying the items on your list.
Manage Weight
Maintaining a healthy weight, along with many other benefits, reduces the burden on your heart and other vital organs. Losing unhealthy weight can reduce your blood pressure and improve your heart function and metabolism.
TIP: Be mindful of the calories you consume - cooking at home gives you more control over portions and ingredients. Eating smaller meals more often throughout the day can help your body process food more quickly.
Stop Smoking
Smoking can increase your heart rate and blood pressure to dangerously high levels. Quitting is the best thing you can do for your health.
TIP: Seek alternatives to manage your stress, including physical activity, meditation, etc. Going for a walk, taking a few deep breaths to release tension, and turning on relaxing music or a podcast while driving are simple ways to de-stress.
