Joan Magruder

Group President

Joan Magruder serves as group president for BJC HealthCare, with responsibilities for an approximate $3 billion portfolio that includes Alton Memorial Hospital, Memorial Hospital Belleville and Memorial Hospital Shiloh, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, Parkland Health Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. In addition, she oversees BJC Medical Group, BJC Behavioral Health, BJC Home Care Services, BJC Corporate Health Services, and serves as the executive sponsor for system pharmacy.

Magruder served as president of St. Louis Children’s Hospital from 2013-2018, and as president of Missouri Baptist Medical Center for the prior seven years. She joined BJC HealthCare in 2000 as vice president of business development, physician services and alternate care sites.

Before joining BJC, Magruder served as the administrator of the department of surgery, outpatient services, transplantation and the physician group practice at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. As administrator of the department of surgery, she had responsibility for strategic planning and financial and operational management of 30 operating rooms and the intensive care and inpatient units. She also directed outpatient services, the transplantation program and the physician group practice. Magruder began her career with The Devereux Foundation Center for Head Trauma, and later served as a Director of a for-profit startup rehabilitation center in Pennsylvania for adults with traumatic brain injury.

In 2015, Magruder was named a Leader of Distinction by the YWCA. In 2012, she was named to the “120 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review and in 2011 was selected by Modern Healthcare as one of the “Top 25 Women in Healthcare.” Magruder serves as chair of The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis Parent Board, the vice chair of the Mid-America Transplant Board and as a board member of the Vizient AMC CEO Executive Board and The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis. She served on the board of directors of the Missouri Hospital Association Management Services Corporation, MHA’s for-profit subsidiary; was an advisory board member for the Center for World Health and Medicine; and served on the national Children’s Hospital Association leadership committee on advocacy and policy. She is a past Missouri Hospital Association District Council President and has also served as the United Way health services coordinator for the St. Louis area.

She holds a master’s degree in business administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. A native of Danbury, Conn., she is married with three children.
