Types of Obstetrical Care Providers:

Obstetrician-Gynecologist (Ob/Gyn)

Doctors who specializes in women’s overall healthcare needs including gynecologic and pregnancy care. They have completed four years of medical school and a residency program providing focused training in reproductive health care and the primary healthcare needs of women. They are trained for any birth situation, including c-sections.

Family Medicine Physician

Doctors trained in primary, maternal and pediatric care. Continually invested in all aspects of your health and your families. Some family medicine specialists are also trained as OBs, so they can perform c-sections or provide more care when complications arise.

Midwife

Registered nurses who have a master’s degree in Nurse-Midwifery. They care for women who are low-risk providing general women’s health care throughout the lifespan, including preventative screenings, pregnancy and birth. They take a more holistic and natural approach to care, rarely using technological intervention and scheduling more time with the patient during appointments for education and to better understand the person.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist

Ob/Gyns who have specialized training in high-risk or complicated pregnancies and fetal anomalies. You may need the care of a maternal-fetal specialist if you have a pre-existing condition prior to pregnancy, if you or your baby develop a medical condition during pregnancy, or if you experience issues during the delivery.

Doula

Doulas, who are not necessarily trained in medicine, are hired by the birthing person to provide physical, emotional, and informative support from pregnancy, delivery, and beyond to ensure you have a happy and healthy birth experience. At BJC, you are welcome to have a doula be part of your care team.
