Types of Obstetrical Care Providers:
OB-GYN
Doctors who specialize in women’s overall health care needs, including gynecologic and pregnancy care. These clinicians have completed four years of medical school and a residency program that emphasized training in reproductive and primary health care needs for women. They are trained for any birth situation, including cesarean sections.
Family medicine physician
Doctors trained in primary, maternal, and pediatric care. Family medicine physicians handle all aspects of family health care. Some are also trained as OB-GYNs so they can perform cesarean sections or provide more care when complications arise.
Midwife
Midwives are registered nurses who provide general health care needs to women in low-risk pregnancies, including preventive screenings and childbirth. They take a more holistic, natural approach to care, rarely using technological intervention and using their appointments to educate and understand patients.
Maternal-fetal medicine specialist
OB-GYNs with specialized training in high-risk or complicated pregnancies and fetal anomalies. Maternal-fetal specialists focus on pregnant patients with pre-existing medical conditions. They also support mothers or babies who develop conditions during pregnancy and have complicated deliveries.
Doula
Doulas, who are not necessarily trained in medicine, are hired by the birthing person to provide physical, emotional, and informative support from pregnancy, delivery, and beyond. They ensure you have a happy and healthy birth experience, and BJC HealthCare welcomes patients who want to add doulas to their care teams.

Specialized Care for You and Baby
Fertility care
Our Washington University Fertility and Reproductive Center was the first IVF program in the state of Missouri. Since then, we have continuously delivered expert, compassionate, innovative, and effective fertility care to the St. Louis region and beyond, with solid success rates, that are consistently higher than the national average.
High-risk pregnancy care
If you are having multiple babies, have diabetes, placenta problems, or an autoimmune disease, your pregnancy may be considered high-risk. Experienced care teams with access to the most advanced monitoring technology will make sure you and your baby are safe and healthy throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth.
Fetal care center
The Fetal Care Center with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and WashU physicians is a leader in providing medical care for pregnant women whose unborn babies have health problems or fetal conditions. We are the only center in the St. Louis region offering specialized surgeries to treat conditions like spina bifida or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome before birth.
Newborn intensive care unit
All our newborn ICUs and special care nurseries are staffed by specially trained nurses and WashU Medicine neonatologists and pediatric specialists from St. Louis Children’s Hospital, providing expert, world-class care for premature and sick newborns in need of highly specialized care.
Maternal-fetal transport
In case of an emergency situation, our 24/7 maternal-fetal transport team is ready and equipped to get you and your baby to the right BJC hospital for the care you need. Whether in flight or in a moving ground vehicle, you will be with a specially trained high-risk pregnancy nurse, a neonatal nurse and a paramedic on every trip to get you to your destination safely.
Postpartum care
We believe there are four trimesters to pregnancy and that care for you needs to continue after the baby is born. Our focus on lactation support, postpartum mood and anxiety disorders like postpartum depression, and monitoring for post-birth complications provides the care and advice you need so you can focus on your baby and growing family
