BJC HealthCare is serious about safety in our hospitals and on our construction sites. The safety and comfort of our patients and their families are paramount. Rigorous protocols to manage the environment during demolition, renovation or new construction reduces the potential risk to those in our buildings and to the construction workers themselves.

Each of BJC’s projects, from renovating an inpatient unit, to demolishing an entire building and building a new hospital or expansion, has site-specific safety and emergency preparedness plans.

On-site safety – Campus Renewal

Barnes-Jewish Hospital conducts a contractor safety class for new workers to the campus to provide OSHA education about communicable diseases and performing work in health care setting. In addition, the orientation covers best practices for construction in health care. Contractors and laborers hired to work on the campus for Barnes-Jewish or St. Louis Children’s Hospital are required to attend the class annually.

At pre-construction meetings, general contractors and subcontractors are informed about the requirement and provided with a schedule.

Loie Couch, Barnes-Jewish Hospital infection prevention specialist, leads the class. Questions can be directed to Loie at 314-368-2064 or [email protected].
