Crews install five MRIs in new Plaza West Tower
June 2025 - More than 17,000 items have been installed in the new Plaza West Tower in anticipation of opening in October, including five MRIs on the second-floor radiology suite.
Installing them was not an easy feat – they can’t just be loaded onto an elevator. Weighing nearly 16,000 pounds, a mobile crane operator lifted each MRI and carefully slid them into 7-foot by 8-foot openings in each MRI room. The floors in each room are reinforced to bear the weight, and each is specially designed with magnetic shielding that prevents external disruptions and contain its field within its designated area.
The MRIs were intentionally placed on the perimeter of the tower just a couple floors up. That way, when one needs replacement, the 7-foot by 8-foot panel can be removed, the old MRI slid out and a new MRI installed.
