Inaugural Construction Diversity Awards

BJC Planning, Design & Construction Hosts Inaugural Construction Diversity Awards

On December 18, BJC Planning, Design & Construction (PD&C) recognized contractors and designers that have demonstrated a commitment to developing and promoting partnerships in alignment with the department’s diversity goals. In 2013, PD&C adopted a policy that set out to change the way the industry approached diversity and inclusion. The local design and construction industry embraced the program and have collectively made strides in changing its approach.

Precious Jackson-Howlett, director of program management services, Construction Management Partners (CMP), worked with BJC to develop the awards program. CMP, PD&C’s diversity consultant, developed BJC 101/201 quarterly educational program.

“2024 was the first year we returned to BJC 201 in person following the pandemic, which was exciting,” says Jackson-Howlett. “So many contractors stayed with the program, and we wanted to do something to acknowledge and highlight the firms that helped us meet our goals and have contributed to the success.”

Mike Hayes, BJC vice president of PD&C, is impressed with the efforts and results demonstrated by all design and construction firms in the department’s toolbox and capacity building warehouse. “For 10+ years, our contractors and designers have worked tirelessly with us to seek meaningful ways to diversify the companies and workforce in so many ways. Our inaugural awards program is our way of not only recognizing those who exemplify our mission, but who have taken extraordinary steps to work closely with BJC and the talented MBE/WBE firms and workforce who are gaining traction in the industry.”

The categories and awardees are:

BJC PD&C DEI Champion of the Year: People’s Choice Award – Vince Nutt

“It came to me as a bit of a surprise because of the amount of attention that PD&C places on our DEI initiatives and programs. It is always at the forefront of our thoughts so when I was named for the award, I was truly honored. You never know if your efforts are noticed when it comes to diversity, but it means a lot to me. I want all our partners and vendors to excel because I believe in our BJC programs and our commitment to the community that we serve.” Vince Nutt, BJC PD&C director of project management

Professional Services Firm of the Year – CannonDesign

“Winning the inaugural award was an honor. We learned a couple weeks in advance at the BJC Design Professionals Annual Meeting that we were one of the six firms that were nominated for this award – even that was a great recognition. To win the award and be recognized for our impact for diversity and inclusion, including the release of our first children’s book in 2024 which aims to inspire diverse youth to pursue careers in architecture and design, addressing diversity challenges in these fields, was an incredible feeling. It was a great message to be able to share this with my team before the holiday break.” Natalie Petzoldt, AIA, EDAC, LEED AP, CLGB. Principal. CannonDesign

Donna Ware, BJC executive director of planning and design, says, “Cannon Design has demonstrated consistent commitment to BJC’s diversity and inclusion program over the years with the creation of their Inclusive Partners Program for diverse firms, now called the Cannon Design Collective.  This past year they significantly increased their commitment.  We have been particularly impressed recently with their work in schools to promote young girls and minorities getting involved in our industry.”

BJC Engagement Award – Sledroc Construction

“I am truly honored that BJC and CMP have recognized Sledroc Construction for our ongoing commitment to participate in BJC 201 and work in the healthcare industry. I believe that BJC 201 is a premier DEI program and I attribute Sledroc’s success in the healthcare industry directly to the lessons learned and connections made while participating in the program. I am very appreciative of the opportunities afforded Sledroc Construction by BJC and the acknowledgement of this esteemed organization.” Cordell Sawyer, president, Sledroc Construction

Construction Manager of the Year – TW Constructors

“We are deeply honored to receive the prestigious award! This recognition is a powerful affirmation of our commitment to excellence in construction management. It highlights the dedication, precision, and collaborative spirit that drive everything we do.

Together, we tackled challenges, innovated solutions, and delivered results that exemplify the highest standards of quality and reliability.
